The quest to stay young looking has become a virtual passion especially as baby boomers move through middle age. You can see it in commercials, particularly for women, who maintain that the effects of age can be defeated, so the skin can remain smooth, soft and wrinkle free. While it’s easy to discount this quest for great looking skin as vanity, there is truth to the idea that taking good care of our skin is a worthwhile ambition for baby boomers as they approach their retirement years.
Often we don’t think a lot about our skin. It seems so self sufficient and self healing that we take for granted that it will just get better when it suffers mild abrasions or cuts or other ailments. Few of us take the time to appreciate the fact that the skin is one of vital organs (the largest one) and that we should take care of it with as much concern as we do for our heart and lungs. Maintaining robust health is a goal for baby boomers who have always been driven to fight the effects of aging and stay youthful. So just as we all have worked together to become aware of the risks for heart disease, cancer and other endemic problems as we age, we should also become well informed on lifestyle choices that can affect the ability of our skin to stay healthy and able to take good care of us well into our golden years.
There is no other body organ that is so exposed to damage and so rugged in resisting the wear and tear of the world than the skin. But the elements and even things we do can cause wear and tear on the skin and cause it to become dry, wrinkled and eventually more susceptible to disease. Some of the things we can do from a lifestyle point of view to give our skin a head start on staying healthy throughout our lives are…
Protect the skin from the extremes of temperature such as harsh wind and cold. These elements will dry the skin and lead to preliminary aging if we don’t take care earlier in life.. Similarly being sensible about exposing our skins to the sun just makes sense. The quest for a good tan, while attractive in the short term, is not good skin care long term. It doesn’t pay to wash the skin in harsh soaps or to scrub it too harshly. While it is good to maintain a clean lifestyle and clean the skin regularly, we have to remember that harsh soaps and being too aggressive with the skin can wear it down and remove natural lubrication and cleansing agents that the skin generates to take care of itself.
Some habits such as smoking which we already identified for other health risks, are also hard on the skin. All you have to do is to look at the face of a lifelong smoker to see the deep lines and the deterioration of the skin caused by that habit to make you want to throw your smokes out the window. Good skin care like tooth care and care of other part, so your body require regular attention, good life style habits and common sense. Just as over attention to brushing the teeth can be as harmful as good, excessive washing and obsession about the skin is just as damaging as neglecting it.
There are proactive things we can do from a lifestyle point of view to give the skin the care it needs to do it’s job of keeping us healthy. Routine use of coconut oil each night helps the skin remain smooth and healthy and is a pleasant nightly ritual for you. Good diet with an emphasis on Vitamin A and including generous portions of fruit, vegetables and carrot juice can keep your skin healthy and robust well into those sunset years. And as baby boomers move into that stage of their lives, they will benefit from a lifestyle of good skin care that started early and continued throughout life.

Taking good care of your skin also requires that you protect it from one of the environment’s most dangerous enemies of healthy skin: the sun! While we all need a certain amount of sun to stay healthy and happy, most people don’t realize the amount of damage that the sun does to unprotected sun. Find a good makeup or moisturizer that contains an SPF of at least 15 and do not leave the house without it.
Another huge skin care tip that people might not realize is the benefit of drinking water everyday. Water is one of the best ways to purify our bodies and therefore to purify our skin. Grab a water bottle and drink it during the day. It is one of the very best things you can do for your skin.

Why is it that all of us cannot keep the skin we were born with. Well I’ve still got my skin but it has changed and, according to my mother, it has changed a lot. It would also need to have stretched a bit, well in my case stretched a lot. As we get older, things happen to our skin, like wrinkles. I have them but I am a man so I can get away with it. Unfortunately, ladies find it harder to get away with having a few wrinkles. As a man, I am not too bothered by a few wrinkles and as long as I keep my skin clean, I do not bother with it much and no one really notices. What we do notice though is skin on women, and because many men are somehow genetically programmed to be uncaring and insensitive about your skin, you spend a great deal of time and effort to make your skin look good.
Why is it then that men can get away with wrinkles but women cannot? Is there anything you can do about it? If you adopt a skin care program then this should help to affect how your skin looks and more importantly it will affect how you feel as well, and that is very important. You have to remember that the skin is the largest organ in your body and so by adopting a skincare program you are looking after yourself.
So what can you do about it? Well to start with after every shower even after you have dried yourself your skin is still damp and by applying moisturizer you are trapping moisture into your skin which is a great plus factor. Another one is to drink water and this hydration helps your skin as well. However, if you notice that even after this your skin is always dry and sometimes a little flakey, just visit your doctor to check things out. One other reason you should quickly visit is if there is a major change such as dark, (or lighter), skin patches and any changes or growth to moles you may have. Get these checked out just to make sure you have no problems.
One thing to watch out for is the effect the sun has on your skin. The sun is at its fiercest when it is highest, which is generally at midday, so just take care. Applying a good sunscreen helps, and another thing to take into consideration is that elastin, which is a substance in your skin, breaks down under strong sunlight. This can cause the skin to sag so just be careful. It is a pity about the effects of sunlight on skin as most of us feel much happier when exposed to sunlight.
Rather than buy every skincare product on the market there is a lot you can do to help your skin by developing your own personal skincare program.
Healthy skin is helped by a healthy diet, and a healthy diet is usually a balanced diet containing fresh vegetables and fruit. Both of these have been found to contain antioxidants which can help your skin protect itself from day to day living. To get the best values from fruit and veg though it must be fresh or only lightly cooked.
Another important factor in skincare is skin hydration and this is helped by drinking a sensibly amount of water. I have seen it suggested that 4 to 8 cups a day is sensible but if you are drinking bottled mineral water check the chemical makeup of the water as some are high in sodium which means high salt levels. Do not fall into the trap that drinking 4 to 8 cups of coffee a day, (which is mainly water after all), is as good for you. Coffee contains plenty of caffeine which helps the body to dispose of water. I had a great idea that I would drink beer instead of coffee as that is mainly water, but drinks containing alcohol, (including wine,) do not class as water either. It does not have to be bottled water either; tap water is fine as long as it is pure and clean. Not at bedtime though as drinking late at night means your body may retain this water causing your skin to stretch a little which is not something you want to happen.
Your skin also stretches when you become overweight and after a diet, and loosing weight, you will need to exercise to tone your skin into shape again. A younger person has more flexible skin but when you are older your skin is not as flexible and it becomes harder to tone your skin after loosing weight. The answer is not to try and put on weight in the first place but that is not always easy especially as we get older. However please try to keep weight gain off your skin care program as the two do not go together.
Whatever you decide to do, do some research and find out what will work best for you. One way of doing this is to talk to people selling skincare products in stores. Although their job is to try and sell you their product, they will still give you good advice. You could ask your friends as well, as some of them may be able to guide you in the right direction. Halloween! Halloween! And a lot of people, not just kids, had a great time indulging in candies, brownies, and all the sweets that abound during this trick or treat fest. But whether it’s Halloween or not, most Americans love to have too much sweets in their diet without regard to getting overweight, which may lead to obesity and other problems related to too much sugar intake such as wrinkles.
According to Kerry Neville, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, “Americans eat too much sugar, and it appears that the threat of making them fat doesn’t seem to discourage excess sugar eating. So this latest wrinkle scare might just do the trick. That is great.”
We all know how far women would go just to stop the aging process, and the prospect of getting wrinkles from too much sugar consumption may affect their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Some women may even develop inferiority complex, and experience stress and anxiety due to aging problems.
A recent study in the British Journal of Dermatology reveals that a process called glycation occurs when sweets — not just refined sugar, but anything that turns into glucose during metabolism in your body — are eaten and the glucose enters the bloodstream. As they float along, they search out and latch on to proteins and form a new molecule called advanced glycation end products, or appropriately shortened to AGEs. The increase in sugar consumption also increases AGEs production. These molecules wreak havoc on the adjacent proteins, the most vulnerable of which are the compounds responsible for keeping our skin firm and elastic: collagen and elastin. The result is sagging, wrinkled skin.
However, here’s the good news for all those who have a “sweet tooth.” There are some things we can still do to remedy the damage being brought about by too much sugar in your diet. Obviously, you have to limit your sugar intake. “The lower your sugar consumption, the better it is for your health,” said Neville.
But it’s not easy to ascertain where those added sugars are coming from. “Eliminating them all is hard,” said Neville. “Often it is a matter of where you are getting the added sugar. Food labels don’t spell out added sugars.” It is important to look for words such as corn sweetener, corn syrup, sucrose or sorghum, to name a few.
On the other hand, Dr. Darren Casey, a dermatologist and dermatological surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, isn’t so worried about potential skin damage from sugar. “Sun and smoking are the leading cause of wrinkles,” he said. Getting plenty of antioxidants in your diet as well as taking chewable vitamin C can help offset the harmful effects of too much consumption of sweet.
Products that contain retinoids can also revitalize sugar-damaged or environmentally challenged skin. Retinoids are a class of compounds related chemically to vitamin A that are readily available over the counter or through prescription. They are the best treatment to help soften fine lines or wrinkles, which in turn will help you look younger.
So when the next holiday treats start to beckon, think again. Don’t get tricked by its sweet talks.

Dry, itchy skin affects more than 80 percent of Americans and can be most prevalent during the cold winter months – when humidity and temperature drop – making skin particularly vulnerable to dryness and cracking.
“Frigid temperatures and low humidity can contribute to dry, winter skin,” says New York City dermatologist Dr. Diane Berson. “It is important to take extra special care of skin during the winter, especially for those with sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin should look for products without dyes or fragrances.”
If you have a problem with dry skin, Dr. Diane Berson recommends that you consider the following:
* What personal care products do you use? Sensitivity to fragrances and dyes commonly found in soaps, lotions and even deodorants can be a frequent cause of skin irritation. Look for personal care products specially formulated for sensitive skin that are hypoallergenic and free of dyes and perfumes, such as all® Free Clear laundry detergent, the No.1 dermatologist and allergist recommended detergent for people with sensitive skin.
* Make the switch. As the temperature dips, your skin craves more moisture. Remember to replace lightweight summer lotion with lotions that have a higher concentration of emollients (lipids), which help skin seal in and retain moisture.
* Get vapor relief. Cranking up the thermostat in winter creates more dry heat, which can leave skin parched and lead to itchiness. Use a vaporizer, which produces hot steam, or humidifier, which produces cool mist, to add moisture to the air. Be sure to thoroughly clean and disinfect humidifiers regularly to prevent harmful particles from building up. This is especially important for people with mold allergies.
* Keep it cool. Chilly winters may make a long hot shower or bath sound enticing, but hot water can actually wash away skin’s natural oils, leaving it extra dry and itchy. Instead, take warm showers and pat skin dry. To lock in moisture, apply body lotions containing ingredients like petrolatum and glycerin which work to keep skin hydrated.

2. Switch to moisturizing body washes.

4. Pamper your bump.
The skin on your abdominal area experiences continuous stretching throughout the whole term of your pregnancy. This stretching can result to unsightly stretch marks long after you have given birth. Prevent stretch marks by regularly massaging your tummy with a moisturizing pregnancy gel or cream.
5. Pay attention to your breasts.
Your tummy is not the only thing that enlarges during pregnancy. Your breasts also increase in size to prepare for lactation. The skin on your breasts and nipples will be particularly sensitive which can lead to itching and dryness. Applying nipple creams on your breasts can reduce the dryness while wearing cotton maternity bras can help reduce the itching.
6. Go easy on the makeup.
